Supply ductwork and registers in a Southern California home

Residential and commercial

Air duct cleaning in Southern California: when it helps and what to expect.

Santa Ana winds, wildfire smoke, and long cooling seasons push a lot of dust through Southern California duct systems. This guide covers when cleaning is worth it, what a good cleaning includes, and what to watch out for.

Why ducts get dirty here

Southern California homes move a lot of dusty air.

Fine dust from Santa Ana winds, smoke from fire season, and nearby construction all end up in the air your system pulls in. A long cooling season means more of that air passes through the ducts, and some of the dirt settles there instead of in the filter.

  • Santa Ana winds and wildfire smoke
  • Dust from construction or a remodel
  • Pets and heavy foot traffic
  • Filters that fit loosely or get changed late

When it is worth it

Signs your ducts need cleaning

Duct cleaning is not something every home needs on a schedule. The EPA suggests cleaning when there is a specific problem rather than as routine maintenance. These are the problems that make it worth doing.

A musty odor or discolored surface alone does not establish that mold is present. Seek a qualified assessment and address the moisture source. Wet or moldy insulated duct material may need replacement rather than cleaning.

  • Suspected mold that needs qualified assessment
  • Dust puffing out of the supply registers
  • Signs of rodents or insects in the ductwork
  • Debris left behind after a remodel
  • A musty smell whenever the system runs

What to expect

What a proper duct cleaning includes

A good cleaning covers the whole system, not only the vents you can see. Wiping the registers does nothing for the dust sitting in the trunk lines and the air handler.

  • Inspection of the ducts and air handler first
  • Supply and return lines cleaned
  • Registers, grilles, and diffusers cleaned
  • Blower and coil checked
  • New filter and an airflow check at the end

Watch for

Be careful with very cheap duct cleaning offers

Ads for whole-house duct cleaning at a very low price are common, and many of those jobs turn into an upsell once the crew is inside. Before anyone starts, ask what is included, how many vents are covered, and whether the air handler is part of the job.

Businesses

Duct cleaning for offices, restaurants, and warehouses

Commercial buildings collect dust, grease, and odors faster than most homes. We clean commercial ductwork too and plan the work around business hours.

EPA guidance on residential duct cleaning

EPA recommends considering the condition of the system rather than cleaning every home’s ducts on a fixed schedule. Cleaning alone is not a guarantee of better health or lower energy use.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Useful answers before you make the call.

How often should air ducts be cleaned?

There is no universal cleaning schedule. Consider an inspection for substantial contamination, pests, or debris released from registers. Suspected mold needs qualified assessment, and the cause of contamination should be corrected before cleaning.

Will duct cleaning lower my energy bill?

Do not assume duct cleaning will reduce your bill. EPA notes that cleaning ducts alone has not been shown to improve system efficiency. Ask about filter condition, coils, airflow, and duct leakage when investigating high energy use.

How long does duct cleaning take?

Most single-family homes take a few hours. Larger homes and commercial buildings take longer, and we give a time estimate after seeing the system.

Should I clean the ducts before installing a new AC?

Have the duct system assessed as part of replacement planning. Cleaning is appropriate for specific contamination; damaged ducts and wet or moldy insulation may need repair or replacement instead.
